In September we will explore the exhibition Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers with members of the curatorial team. This exhibition focuses on a portfolio of af Klint’s drawings that is new to MoMA’s collection. Breaking with traditional botanical art, af Klint juxtaposed her exquisitely rendered blossoms with precisely drawn diagrams. With this profusion of forms—an expansion of the abstract language for which she is best known—af Klint visualizes “what stands behind the flowers,” demonstrating her belief that careful observation of her surroundings reveals ineffable aspects of the human condition.

Image Description: A photograph of a hand holding a magnifying glass over a botanical illustration painting. The circular frame of the magnifying glass hovers over a flower with yellow petals and green leaves painted delicately with watercolors on a cream colored paper. Surrounding the flower, out of the focus, are small painted gridded diagrams and flower stems.
